YouTube audio play very big role on your channel success. if your audio is hard to understand or consume lots of noise or echo, your video viewers will leave the video earlier then they should have. Despite having great effort while making video I struggle a lot with my audio recording and editing for first few YouTube videos. In this video, I will show you how I record and edit audio at home using DaVinci resolve. If you also do youtube video from home, this video is for you.
Intro
The microphone I am using for recording is Yeti Blue but you can even do with any headphone set. If you use other than Yeti Blue, you maybe you need to edit little extra but that one I will show you.

So, in Yeti blue, I have this setting, gain set to 0 and in the pattern, I have one with heart sign, which pick the audio from front and avoid the noise from backside.

Remember, you can record audio using Yeti with many other applications as such, voice memo for mac, voice meter banana for window but I find DaVinci resolve recording is one of the best I found by far.
So, How I record Audio in Davinci Resolve?
Let’s connect audio recording device with computer, in this demo, Yeti Blue USB cable is connected to my computer.
Let’s open DaVinci and see the setting.
I am going to create a project called demo.
When you create a new project, you land into Cut window, we need to work on Edit window. So, let’s go to Edit window. Since I don’t have any object in Edit window, davinci resolve don’t allowed patch the recording device. Let’s put a Basic text title in the timeline, as you can see, this object opens the audio and video section in time time. Since we have audio and video section enabled now, Let’s head to fairlight (the little music icon) and setup the audio recording device in davinci resolve.
On Fairlight window, if you don’t see the Mixer on the right pane, just click to Mixer icon located on the right menu bar on the top. On the mixer, click to input section, where is shows no input, and choose input. As you can see the Yeti Blue as source, if you land in elsewhere choose Audio Inputs from drop down. The audio sources 1 and 2 correspond to the audio to right and left hearing. For this demo I am going to choose both 1 & 2 yeti stereo and click to patch. As you can see in the input section of Mixer, Yeti stereo is listed.
Let’s look at the audio timeline, you can see the R square button, if you click this, you davinci resolve are ready to record your audio. To record the audio, you have to click the record icon location in top, next to play and stop icon.
Before recording sets have some useful tips if you are new to audio recording in davinci resolve: if you find difficult understanding this text, please watch the video below.

  1. While recording, Put your Yeti Blue or Microphone approx. 50-75 inch away from your mouth.
  2. If you don’t have pop filter in your microphone, cover your mike with some clothes, I always put my winter cap over the mike. Trust me it makes different.
  3. Put an earphone / headphone in your laptop or computer audio input, this help avoid echo in your audio while recording.
  4. While recording the audio make sure you voice level is between -10 to – 15 dB (yellow bar) in the audio section of Mixer.

personally, this happen with me, I am a very shy guy and I struggled a lot when I first making YouTube videos, I used to have unnecessary pause or some high and low voice while recording. It’s still the case sometime but now if I feel the audio I am recording is fast or too slow or something is not correct I record the same line again. Having an additional recording is always good.
Once you are done with recording. You can check, your audio quality is almost 90% better than all the other recording software. Now, let’s make it 100% correct with some EQ setting.
This is where you need to understand your voice.

Click to EQ located in the same pan as input in the Mixer. Now let’s enable Band 1 and Band 6 as well.
The basic setting Band 1 is Frequency around 60 to 110, based on how high you maintained in dB while recording. For the Band 6, from 6K to 10K goes better.
In this video, I am going to edit based on my voice, I believe every voice have different high and low but if you understand the concept here, you will understand what you need fix in your audio.

While editing make your audio playing in background with loop selected. In Audio Equalizer, For the Band 1 and Band 6, I use same Metrix as described above.
I am recording this audio in my room, so For Band 2, not much we need to do but I want Band 2 align after band 1 and similar frequency to match the audio level.
In Band 3, make gain +20 and Q Factor to 10.3, now let’s find the unusual sound by moving Frequency, there I find something like broken tape kind of voice. Let’s do similar fining on Band 4 as well. Ok, I found another crack kind of voice in audio. Now I am going to lower the gain of these band 3 and band 4 to approx. -10 dB. I suggest you have headphone while moving these audio gain to plus and minus. -10dB fits good on my voice, yours could be different -8 or -11.

Now on the Band 5, I am going to align with Band 6 and move a bit. My audio is way better now.

For the editing the audio in Davinci Resolve: Let’s head to Edit window.
Like I explain earlier in this video, If I feel like the audio I am recording is not clear or I am speaking too fast, tool slow or some noise just pop up while recording. I take multiple recording. Now with the help of this blade, I am doing to trim or cut my audio and remove the does not need for my video. The best part of having recording device connected to DaVinci Resolve is; if I find my sentence is not finished or I just want to add some additional voice in my audio, I can place the recording in exact place in the audio timeline and head toward Farlight and start recording the additional audio right away. This is the super easy way I found while recording the audio. No Exporting, importing or anything. Since all the audio setting as such Equalizer (EQ), noise remover are located in Audio 1 timeline, I don’t even need to edit anything additional.

Let’s see how does this sound when I add background music in this audio. For the background music, First, I normalize the music by -20, the audio can still be loud and your viewers can find difficulties while listening to your video. Now, I want to zoom the audio timeline. You can see the background audio have a line in the middle, if you hover your mouse, you can see you can move the wave up and down, I want background music to low level so, I will make wave small. This seems very long, let me trim it and play it as loop. You can also adjust the background music smoothly ending or starting anywhere in the video using this tool.
There are many other stuffs, we can do, this video is for homemade basic yet good quality audio recording setting using Yeti Blue, are you also having similar issue, how do you resolve your home studio audio setup? Please comment below. Until then, take care and see you.
